Big Obsidian Flow at Newberry NM Field Trip
Led by Thomas Giachetti, University of Oregon
Monday, June 29, 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM
You are invited to join Thomas Giachetti and University of Oregon students who are doing a physical volcanology field course at Newberry National Monument. The primary focus of the day is the education of the the students so COGS members who participate should keep that in mind.
The trip will start at the Big Obsidian Flow parking lot at 9:30 AM. After an introductory lecture we will walk short trail (3/4 of mile, 200' elevation gain/loss) that climbs onto the flow. After that we will go to the base of the flow where the students will estimate the thickness and there will be a summary lecture.
The next activity is a somewhat challenging hike to pumice flat that is on the east flank of Paulina Peak. This is about 7 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about a 1000'. We will be hiking slowly, making several stops to make observations and discuss what we see. There is an option to turn around about halfway which reduces the elevation gain to just a couple hundred feet. When you register please send me an email if you plan on the shorter option.
Participants must be a member of COGS or a guest of a member. As always please leave your pets at home as they are not allowed on COGS field trips.
Ride Sharing: Participants who are interested may meet at the Walmart in Bend, SW corner of parking lot at 8:30 am. This is an informal ride share and will be self-organizing.
