EVENT DETAILS:

The Two Cascades

Monday, July 17 and Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

GSOC is planning a field trip where we will explore the differences between the Western and High Cascades. We will travel, in caravan style, Oregon Hwy 22 as it traverses the two Cascade ranges and look at the features that make them distinct. The trip will incorporate all types of volcanoes and volcanism as they are expressed in these regions. One of the highlights of the trip will be riding the summer chair lift at Mt. Bachelor for views of the Three Sisters area.

The basic trip itinerary is to drive from Salem to Bend on Monday and from Bend to Salem on Tuesday, with some side trips to features along the way. We will leave Salem early on Monday, July 17, do a couple of stops in the Bend area on Tuesday morning, and return to the area in the late afternoon on Tuesday, July 18.

The trip is composed mostly of driving and looking at various stops along the route; there will be a modest amount of walking involved at some stops, but no strenuous hiking. Participants should bring clothing layers, boots or sturdy shoes, walking poles, hats and sunscreen on this trip.

The trip leaders are GSOC Past President Sheila Alfsen- Portland State University, Linn Benton and Chemeketa Community Colleges, Dr. Daniele Mckay - Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oregon, and Alyssa Smith, PhD student from Portland State University. GSOC Board Member Dennis Chamberlin is helping to organize the trip.

TRANSPORTATION

We will car caravan mostly along paved roads but also some stretches of gravel road. Transportation is the responsibility of the participants.

LODGING

Lodging is the responsibility of the participants on this self-catered trip. Participants will need to secure their own lodging in Bend, Oregon, where we will spend one night. For reasonably priced hotels in Bend, we recommend Campfire Hotel and also Motel West. There are other possibilities for lodging in Redmond. Local campgrounds include Tumalo State Park and La Pine State Park.

FOOD

Participants will be responsible for purchasing and stocking their own food supply for the trip.

We recommend eating a modest breakfast and packing sack lunches. For dinner the night of July 17, we are planning to have an optional get-together at a local restaurant in Bend.

REGISTRATION

Participants for the two-day trip must be GSOC members or their guests. The fee is $80. The trip will be registered on a first come, first served basis. Registration for general membership will begin on Saturday, June 17, 2023. Trip fees are non-refundable.

We will also be registering some COGS members for the two stops in Bend on Day 2. Registration details will be sent to COGS leaders and emailed to COGS members. Cost of this option is $10.

Fees will include leader/reconnaissance expenses, some printed materials, and a small donation to the Bev Vogt scholarship fund. All other fees, including entrance fees, parking fees, etc., will be the responsibility of the participants.
