Wednesday, June 24, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

You are invited to join Thomas Giachetti and University of Oregon students who are doing a physical volcanology field course at Newberry National Monument. The primary focus of the day is the education of the the students so COGS members who participate should keep that in mind.

The main focus of that day is to dig a single, rather large/deep pit and go through methods, goals, dos and don’ts, etc. of physical volcanology. We will start at the Prairie campground with a ~15-30 min briefing (starting ~8:30 am) and then will drive to the caldera. We will stop at the lake across the visitor center for a quick overview of the caldera and situating the students and then we will go east of the caldera, not too far on NF-21 and dig a pit which should be around 6 foot deep. We will spend quite some time there digging, discussing, etc. There will not be any hiking. We will park on the NF road and work within 100-200 m from our vehicles. Per COGS policy, ridesharing is voluntary but encouraged due to limited parking. We will probably leave that site back to camp around 4 pm or sooner if done before that, with a stop at the East lake Resort.

Participants must be a member of COGS or a guest of a member. As always please leave your pets at home as they are not allowed on COGS field trips.

Ride Sharing: Participants who are interested may be meet at the Walmart in Bend, SW corner of parking lot at 7:45 am. This is an informal ride share and will be self-organizing.

Please contact Derek Loeb ( DerekLoeb@gmail.com ) with any questions.
Registration must be done via the registration button on the trip listing on the COGS website. Successful registration will be confirmed on the webpage by a light green box indicating registration was successful and by a confirmation email. If you don't get this email you should try the registration process again. If the trip is full, please join the wait list.
