Led by Scott Wallace & Hank Johnson

Wednesday, May 20, 10 AM-2:30 PM

Registration is Open

Opal Springs is located within a deep gorge of the lower Crooked River approximately five (5) miles southwest of Culver in Jefferson County, Oregon. Opal Springs is a prolific spring that emerges from basalt of the lower Deschutes Formation along the east bank of the river. Water from Opal Springs was first utilized in 1898 and is currently operated and managed by the Deschutes Valley Water District (DVWD). This field trip will explore the geology and hydrogeology of the Lower Crooked River above Lake Billy Chinook (Round Butte
Reservoir) and include a tour of the rock fill diversion dam, hydroelectric facility, recently constructed fish-ladder, and historic structures associated with Opal Springs settlement and development. This field trip is geared toward a general audience who wants to learn more about the geology and hydrogeology of the Deschutes Basin and the historical development and current management of one of the largest groundwater springs in central Oregon. No geologic background is necessary. Walking surfaces will include short sections of paved roads, dirt roads, and partially maintained trails. Bring water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for the weather forecast. There will be restroom facilities at
Opal Springs. Participants must be a member of COGS or a guest of a member. As always please leave your pets at home as they are not allowed on COGS field trips.

Ride Sharing: Participants will meet at the Cascade Village Shopping Center in Bend at 10:00am in the northwest section of the parking lot, between PetsMart and Ashley Furniture. There will be a secondary meetup with DVWD representative at an unimproved parking lot located west of US Hwy 97 at the west end of SW LaSalle Lane before our short, steep descent via 4WD vehicles into the canyon. This is an informal ride share and will be self-organizing.

We are recruiting participants who have a 4wd with a low range and know how to use it and would be willing to drive. We will have a secondary meetup spot near Culver for those not traveling from the Bend area.

Please contact Derek Loeb ( DerekLoeb@gmail.com ) with any questions.
Registration must be done via the registration button on the trip listing on the COGS website. Successful registration will be confirmed on the webpage by a light green box indicating registration was successful and by a confirmation email. If you don't get this email you should try the registration process again. If the trip is full, please join the wait list.

It has erupted 3 times in the last 30 years, making it the most active volcano in the Pacific Northwest (even though you can't see it!). It is monitored in real-time by seafloor instruments connected to a cabled observatory. Data from that monitoring network suggest that the volcano is building toward its next eruption. This talk will describe the most recent monitoring data and its implications for forecasting the next eruption.
